Technology-Packed Distance Education Building to Officially Open
Filled with 80” touch-screen monitors and the latest smart-classroom technology, Utah State University’s new Distance Education building officially opens Wednesday, Oct. 3.
Utah Gov. Gary Herbert and USU President Stan Albrecht will be on hand for a virtual ribbon cutting ceremony that will connect USU’s 26 campuses and education centers and 12,000 students statewide to the new building.
“This has been over 100 years in the making,” said Robert Wagner, vice provost. “That’s how long USU has been delivering higher education throughout the state via traditional correspondence courses, travelling professors and, more recently, broadcast classes and the Internet.”
Featuring state-of-the-art classrooms filled with interactive video conferencing broadcast equipment and digital technology, the Distance Education building represents USU’s fulfillment of its land grant university mission to deliver higher education throughout Utah regardless of geographic location.
“We are charged with ensuring our citizens have access to higher education,” President Albrecht said. “This building and all of its technology allows us to effectively and efficiently deliver more than 700 broadcast and online courses while offering our students the choice of 48 different degrees.”
The 40,000 square foot building follows Leadership in Energy and Environment (LEED) guidelines and was built using university funding along with generous donations from corporate partners that include Cisco, Cache Valley Electric, Steelcase and izzy +. The Utah Education Network also houses a technical support center in the building to monitor and serve its entire network.
The afternoon’s events at the building include a reception from 3:30-4:30 p.m., followed by the virtual ribbon cutting from 4:30-5 p.m. Tours of the new building follow the ribbon cutting.
